Well if you don't like what you got on the first strike, hit it again:

Mint-Error

This turns a 1671 Potosi 8 reales into 88 reales. Not quite as subtle as the doubling on a 1955 cent....

This image looks like crud. I'll try again with a bigger image file - both obverse and reverse this time:

Mint-Error

That's better - you can also see a double strike on one of the obverse castles, too. If this coin had been fully struck, there would be a rim legend. There are fragments of the "El Peru" letter bases, and the base of the date showing on the reverse, but nothing can be seen of the obverse legend (such as the king's name, or the country). In Potosi production must have taken precedence over quality control....the planchet does not come close to being round or flat - the only thing they got right was the coin weight.

I've always liked cobs, but I REALLY like them with dates! Very dramatic doubling!
