When I bought this one, in the late 70s, I was told it was an F12. Curious as to your thoughts. Thanks.

I can't see it as a F-12. It's VG for me, looks like an old cleaning, and the obverse may have been burned?

Are you saying the black mark is from an old cleaning, or the fact that the coin is so clean is because it was clearly cleaned at some point? Just curious. Thanks.

VG-10 in my opinion. Has lots of parallel hairlines on the obverse indicating a cleaning. Was likely much darker in color at one time and was then cleaned but they couldn't fully remove the black stuff on the obverse. Like zxcccxz said it could be damage resulting from a fire.

I though it could be burned because the black stuff is definitely not toning. It has a burn pattern and is also raised implying that heat caused some of the metal to move.

Also, looks like there is some PVC on the reverse (nothing major). Could use an acetone bath.

VG10, I too see the hairlines but don't think it would bag for them. Maybe it would get hit another grade and end up an 8.

Sorry to be a bummer, but it looks a lot like my 1902 half that was graded VG10 by the Community. I'm going with VG10, still a very nice coin that I would be happy to have in my collection

F-12 cleaned. The denticles look too good for a VG.
Rest in Peace
