Hi members:

There are two coins below, both are believed as a H58 category. The first coin looks more typical but the second is likely to be a variety (I supposed).

The second coin differs from the first coin in two ways:

1)It is a proof specimen. Why did a Trade dollar be minted in proof condition? Besides the Paris second type issue (H70), this is the second proof specimen of MTT I have ever seen.

2)Note the reverse side of the second coin. There are two feather appendage (red circled) at each side of the wings. They don't look like to be the die cracks. I would suppose it is a mint mark or something for identification.
Do any members have the same coin for this category?

The first coin is 28.00 grams, 39.8-40.2 mm.
The second coin is 27.98 grams, 39.6-40.0 mm.

Please see the pictures and comment. Thank you.

Hi Henry

You have reminded me I have to try the paris mint again and see if they will tell me about the proof strikes( I have one also) On that second one you pictured.....I don't mean to rain on your parade...... it looks wrong. I would have to examine it in my hands but the impression I get from the photo is that someone has polished it( possibly whizzed). I really like the first coin you pictured it is a very nice example

Indeed, that coin is badly polished.

The unusual additional details around the wings might be die-clashes.

Thank you, both of you have good eyes. After a close examination, I can see the blank field is rough, not as smooth as a real proof specimen. I also think the additional details at the feather are two small digs made artificially.
