Here's a very interesting 9 over 8. Or is it? I'v already had another large cent expert tell me its not. (He did tell me what it was) What is it?

It's a 9 over inverted 9 and probably type 2. The type ones have a quadpunched C in Canada and a D/C from the first lobe of leaf as to the denticle.

What's interesting about tfred's above 9 over inv 9 is that you can just see a bit of the hoop on the inside loop of the lower right side of the 9..

Now is the type 2 "9 over inv 9" a bit tougher than the type 1..?

The type 1 is the harder of the 2. You'd have to check the Haxby site, as there may even be 3 types of the 9/6. The type 1 is the only one that was put in Charlton, so the prices don't cross over to the type 2.

Here's a Turner OB10 - RD7....with these dies being used on ~ 2 % of the 1559/8's..

it looks like the Spur on the 1881.
How did it happen? any plausible explanation for it?
It does not look like PMD to me.

How did the O in ONE come to be this way?

re-punched die? re-engraved die double strike?
damaged die? Grease Filled Die? MD?
or, any other way?
