IMO it's been in water for some time, be it a lake, river, creek, wet shoreline etc. The acidic value of the water and or the shoreline caused the corrosion. I'm opting for moving water on this one judging by how the reverse is corroded so it was probably reverse side up. Based on my years of underwater metal detecting finds.
