Here's a quick shot of one:  I'm trying to handle the coins as little as possible, so I didn't take it out. But the plastic inside doesn't feel as flimsy and flexible as Saran Wrap. |

The coin might be in a mylar sleeve inside a soft flip. If that is the case the coin is safe. I have seen many coins in high end collections that were stored that way to protect them from the danger from the soft flip.

I think you are fine for now with the storage of the coins. What do you plan on doing with them?

Then I need to figure out what I want to keep and what I'm willing to sell to make the sister happy. Right now I'm leaning toward keeping the half dollars, the Morgans, the $2.5 and $5 Indians, and the Gaudens designed gold pieces. I'm not sure about that though. I think I'll send all the coins $300+ to a TPG (thinking PCGS), which will be quite an expense but sounds like it'll be worth it. |

This has turned out to be a great inheritance. My grandfather passed away a few years ago, and I was honored when I was asked to go through his collection because he got me started collecting 40 years ago. When I went through the footlocker of coins I was dismayed because there was not much worth more than $100 (for a single coin). Those that were more than $100 were bullion coins that I gave to my uncle to distribute to his siblings. I later learned that my grandparents were victims of a burglary, and the belief is the thief took all of the valuable coins. It was a disappointment to me. Seems you are having a much better experience.

I am learning that my father certainly had an impressive collection, and we are very lucky to have inherited it without incident. I have some mixed feelings about selling the coins, and will certainly be keeping a portion of the collection. I do have anxiety now about making sure that I sell them in the correct way. I'm thinking that I might try to sell lower priced coins myself on ebay, but I really think I will go through an auction house for the more expensive ones. I'm wondering if folks have any ideas about what value of coin would make sense to go through an auction house and what value is OK to sell myself through something like ebay. Any thoughts? Thanks. |

I look forward to seeing photos of the gold coins. Particularly the 1800 and branch mint pieces, if possible. Sorry to hear about your family's loss, but glad to know you're seeking good advice and counsel regarding your father's collection.

Thanks for posting those links. I'll be posting more pics soon when my lights arrive. For now, I have a question that isn't too exciting. I believe about 8 of the coins in the collection are "bullion" coins, and I'm wondering what the best way to sell those would be. There are two US coins from 1987, a 1/10 oz and a 1 oz. There is a 1 oz Panda and three smaller chinese coins from 1985-6. And there are two Canadian 1 oz coins from 1986. Should I try to sell these coins in the same way as other coins...potentially ebay for the cheaper/smaller coins and the larger through an auction house? Or is it a different situation with these bullion coins? Does it make sense to have these graded? Thanks again. |
