Hello, everybody.
Do any of you all make a point of collecting "unusual" or "obsolete" denominations?
Specifically, does anybody seek to form collections of 2, 3, and 20 cent pieces? I would think that might be a pretty interesting approach to take, since they are all from the same time period (the 1850s to 1880s).
Personally, I like the design of Longacre's 2 cent bronze coin, though the "trime" leaves something to be desired and the 3 cent nickel is rather plain, to say the least. Wm. Barber's 20 cent piece seems to be something most of us have only one of for our type collections, even though that short series has readily-available CC and S mint marks from 1875.
Does Dansco or Whitman make an album for these? I would think they might for the 3 cent ones.
Thanks.
Kevin.

Each of those issues has legions of devoted fans, including many members here. A large plurality of them cross into the others from gravitational pull.

Your topic title tricked me. While for the average American those denominations seem "unusual", 2 and 20 are very common around the world and even 3 is used by quite some countries. If you want to see "unusual", have a look at https://goccf.com/t/191005That said, I wish you luck with whatever you choose to collect.

Medieval,
Thanks for the the link. That is excellent!
As for myself, like I said my favorite "unusual" US design is Longacre's 2 cent bronze coin. I know some people do not like the shield design, but to me it is not only a pretty design, but the Union shield idea evokes the times.
Thanks again for your input.
Kevin.

sSuperdave,
Yeah, I figured as much! I mean, once you start collecting the 1860s and 1870s 2-cents, you MUST get the nickel 3 centers, right? And as long as you get the NICKEL 3 cents, you are forced to get the silver Trimes, and then....... amirite?

I will collect all of the U.S. classsic coins of all the odd denominations, budget allowing. My U.S. collection is a part of my World collection, which consists of almost all obsolete coinage. As such, I guess that makes me a type collector. You end up with all sorts of odd, unusual and interesting coins, which may have nevertheless circulated.
Labelled flips are the most practical way of managing such a collection.
I have to resign myself to the fact that I will never own a Stella.

sel,
meh. Personally, I would not worry about the Stella since it was a pattern/test coin (though a very interesting idea to "normalize" American currency with the world market).
I just stick to coins that actually jangled in peoples' pockets. But to each his.her own, I reckon.

KevinH: That's what I reckon as well, to be honest. I am much less interest in a coin that does not at least have a qualification for a circulation history.

As KevinH said, Quote: I just stick to coins that actually jangled in peoples' pockets. With one exception I only collect business strikes. The exception is my birthyear set for which I included proofs.

I thought this was another thread about actual various weird denominations (stuff like 960 or 1/13). I briefly considered the idea of trying to get as many weird denominations as I could, but decided that I have neither the persistence nor the money. Might reconsider if I somehow get some fractional shillings, however.

I collect both Half Cents and Half Dimes, both obsolete types though I don't think either are "unusual".
