I think I read that they were issued in pliofilm but just wanted to make sure, also is there a way if they were issued in pliofilm to tell between them and proof likes using the packaging?

Thanks for the help but I'm talking about the specimen sets and how to identify one, that is just a place set.

I believe the 6 coin Specimen set came in a leather bound
presentation case. There was a low mintage of only 1200 produced.
Any sets in original Pliofilm are Proof-like Sets.

I found an auction for a specimen set, looks like they were in pliofilm originally, thanks for the help everyone.

Is this set referenced in Charlton Vol Two?

I don't see it anywhere in my copy (3rd ed. 2013)

Specimen sets weren't produced for mass consumption until the 1967 set. According to Charlton Vol 1 there were just 3,250 specimen sets struck in 1965. It doesn't specifically mention which case was used but the two closest set cases that are mentioned (1953 & 1967) weren't issued in pliofilm but just as exposed coins in cases.

It is amazing how foggy the information on early specimen sets is. Do back-issues of the RCNA journal cover the topic?

There is one definite specimen finish set in pliofilm: The one year experiment of the uncirculated sets of 1996.

If your referring to Charlton Vol 1, the figure 3,250 refers to the price, not the mintage. It does not state the mintage anywhere, at least not in my Volume.
I got the mintage of 1200 from the Coins of Canada catalogue.

By the way, 1200 is the price, not the mintage. The mintage isn't listed.
