During the minting process, is it at all possible for a coin to get bent? If so what would the scenarios be to create such? All help on this much appreciated, cheers. Jon

Coins can be bent in the collar, especially if the planchet is slightly too big...

Once it hits circulation, it would be hard to prove that it was not post mint damage...

true is that, ty SPP, it's tough to disprove a negative that being PMD thoughts if it were an actual minting error.

A coin bent during striking would also show evidence of what bent it, such as the collar, another coin, feed fingers, etc. In each case, however, the bend would be fairly violent looking on the coin and would jam up sorting and counting equipment.

Has a bent coin ever been found in the middle of a mint shrink wrapped roll?

A collar die can depress and for several reasons, firstly so it doesn't brake itself or the the hammer die, secondly stopping to change a collar die takes up production time not to mention the cost of a new collar die. BUT sometimes they malfunction. A die frozen in position is a great place to hold up the show and bend a few coins.

Some time ago, I purchased some 2001P Volunteer shrink wrapped 10 cent rolls. One of the rolls had what looked like a bent coin in it, so I opened the roll, and there was a nice BU dime. I am in the process of setting up my new computer and microscopic camera, so will post pictures of the coin when I'm done setting up. Hope this pic works.... :)...

Thats a nice example, got past quality control. That would have been a very cool error coin while it was in the mint wrap.

I have seen a bent 10c coin, placed in a specimen set (specimen strike)... no doubt it left the mint that way, but still a mystery how it got that way. I have also seen a bent, uncirculated 1963 silver dollar, from a mint bag of $1000 - with no marks on the coin whatsoever to indicate it was done outside of the coin press - silver dollars are quite thick, so that one was a real head scratcher...

It's interesting that the Specimen 10 cents got through the quality control department. I always thought each coin was inspected individually. Not having any marks on the 1963 dollar is odd as well. Before finding the bent Volunteer dime, I had put aside a couple of circulated bent pennies (1985 & 2004) that have similar markings as the dime has. On the cupped side of all of the coins, there is what looks like an incomplete clip. Will try to post pics this weekend.

I have seen damaged 25c coins come out of mint wrapped rolls. Presumably they were damaged by the Mint's counting and/or wrapping machines. So, they are not quite PMD (Post Mint Damage) but rather Mint Damaged. The roll with a damaged coin is interesting but not really collectable in my opinion. Unless there's something else going on - you'd have to open up the roll and find out for sure.
