1740 8 reales, Viceroyalty of New Spain, Mexico City mint.  Although certified by NGC, the rims look like it may have been edged after it was struck -- one of the signs that it may not be genuine. Edited by jgenn

1736 8 reales, Viceroyalty of Peru, Potosi mint. Although milled coinage was being produced in Mexico City as early as 1732, Potosi continued to produce macuquinas, the irregularly shaped, hand hammered coins, also known as 'cobs', until 1773. For a period of time, both macuquinas and milled coins were produced at Potosi until enough resources could be provided to handle the volume of silver that flowed through the mint. This is the pillars and waves design that was introduced at Potosi in 1651 to reaffirm the reliability of coinage from this mint after scandals involving debased issues.  Edited by jgenn
