I am interested in grading this, but also have a question - is this verdigris?

Yes, that is verdigris.
I'd say, around VG.

If the coin is in its own cardboard/plastic casing, is it safe around the rest of my coins? I was told to be careful with verdigris being near my other copper coins. Is it not worth keeping this one?

Coin can only catch it from another if they are touching.
Would take this one out of the flip (eventually - not urgent), brush the loose stuff off and dip it in acetone (that should inactivate the verdigris) and then put into another flip.

I would term it more along the lines of corrosion. Your coin may have been in the ground, and probably would get a "details" annotation for environmental damage. The excessive wear to the denticles, especially on the reverse, likely consign it being graded no better than G.
