Looking to expand upon the discussion of the following thread in the Numismatic Crime section.

https://goccf.com/t/194754

Of course the appraisal fee will greatly depend on the size and value of the collection but I've always heard that a professional numismatist will charge approximately a $100 per hour for an detailed appraisal on company letterhead. I don't see how the appraiser in the above thread could possibly defend his charge of $26,000 for the appraisal of a $9,000 collection/accumulation. The coin dealers that I've seen do appraisals usually are able to go through a collection rather quickly, separating the common stuff from the items with more potential very efficiently.

So many things can make such an appraisal really only a guess. By that I mean some dealers will make the estimate low so they could buy it and some would make it higher for insurances. Some could just make it a guess and still charge for doing it.
How much should it cost? That too could depend on if you know the appraiser. If a friend, might be really cheap. If a complete stranger, might be really high.
IF all the coins are sort of in Albums and/or organized well, such an appraisal could take only minutes. IF all the coins are just in piles, boxes, cans, etc., such a situation could take many hours and again, depending on the size of t he collection.
One dealer I know tells me he does coin collection appraisals free if the owner says they may sell to him. Or at least some of the coins.

There are different sorts of appraisals. If this relates to an estate, or is driven by a bank, the appraisers often charge high. Conversely, one coin dealer I have known for years will charge around 25-40$ per hour, provide a detailed break down, and annotate with retail / wholesale / buy it now prices.

That doesn't mean he would take advantage of a widow who wanted a bag full of common wheat cents and charge per coin. Some items get batched up and priced as such.

Like everything else you always want to find an appraiser who will work within the constraints of time / money / effort.
