I remember reading about this on this forum before, but can't seem to find that thread anymore. Are anybody reporting the same? I purchase my coins either directly from the RCM or from authorized/listed sellers. Aside from noticing the missing initials on my own collection, I have collectors that bought from me bring up authenticity issues as well.
A call to the RCM produced nothing. The customer service rep simply said all coins should appear physically as they appeared digitally, with the artist's initials...
Basically - error, but could be error from different types:
1. All the population of coins minted without initials, this error similar to the Penny from 1908-1998 Antique finish set 2. Some of them do bear initials - this is more interesting case.
i propose to the people to look at their coins and post the result.
yeah I checked this yesterday for Elkslayer. He encounter the same issue with his buyer asking how come the coin didn't have initial. I checked my barn swallow and there's no initial on mine
Thank you all for checking. Odd inconsistency in the series; some years with initials and some years without. Too bad RCM employees can't double check beyond looking at the digital mock up.
Quote: wow is that cool or what. They must have made two different dies.
Nothing to do with dies.
There is no reason to believe that any two coins in the same issue are different. To my knowledge, no one has ever had two of the same coin where one had initials and the other did not.
Some of the 14 Birds of Canada artist renderings showed the engravers initial when the actual coins produced did not. It's simply a cause of sloppy work by the mint in not matching it's drawings with the finished coins. To make it worse, the series is inconsistent in that some of the designs do have initials on the coins while other designs don't.
However, the only error that exists are the drawings, not the coins.
The major problem is that the drawing that the mint created (with initials) becomes a source of information for some new collectors and the error on the drawing leads to confusion and fears of counterfeiting of the coins.
