Hello all,

I came across these two coins while browsing. I am not a Morgan collector ( I only have a few raw common dates) but I thought these looked good, the 83 CC in particular. Any opinions about these dates and these coins in particular? Upwards of $300 (like 3x more than I ever spent on a coin!) is a lot for me to spend on a coin but I don't have any CCs

I actually went back and looked closer at the 83 and noticed scratches or some markings around the left wing, particularly around the shoulder. What is that? Any ideas? FYI, the best pics for the listing can be found by scrolling down to the description.

Personally, I think they were very generous in the grade they gave the 1883-CC.

However, I do like the 1897-S.
Rest in Peace

The 1883 CC may be a technical 64 grade and I'm guessing the + is due to semi PL surfaces. The marks you see on the reverse are die polish lines found on this particular die pairing http://www.vamworld.com/1883-CC+VAM-5. There's a ton of 1883 CC Morgans out there, so be picky and find one that is has the eye appeal and price point you're looking for. The 1897 S is not nearly as plentiful as the '83 CC but there are some real nice examples out there including PL. I like both of these coins but the '97-S seems like the better deal of the two.

Although I'm a huge sucker for CC coins, I have to agree with Dave and say that the 97S is probably the better deal of the two. Both coins are nice though, keep up posted on what you decide.

The 1883 is rather drastically overpriced IMO even if it made 64+ which it doesn't. The 1897 is maybe $20 above market but looks like a pretty strong example. That one, I'd probably snag at the price. Bet the luster is blinding.

IMHO, buy a nice 1883-CC in a GSA holder, instead. More originality to a GSA Morgan.
