Not familiar with this coin or their minting process at that time but it does resemble a Struck Through Grease error . Basically the die becomes filled in that area with particles of dust , metal shavings or whatever bound together with a bit of grease creating a somewhat solid filler that inhibits a full strike in that spot. |

Without seeing it in hand or much better photography, it's hard to tell. It could just as easy be corrosion.

I think it is completely legit as a strike through error. Look how sharp the edges of the anomaly are...

I would agree with SPP. This is a known die pair (OF1/RB15) where numerous other coins were struck with both the obverse and reverse dies exhibiting grease in the dies. Usually the filled dies only involved a few letters of the obverse and reverse legends. It is not a stretch to see the grease spreading to involve a larger section of the obverse die.

Looks fairly legit, completely different color in that area though almost like a chemical reaction. Looks like it was cleaned up a long time ago and retoned itself. just my opinion
