They lost their legal tender status in 1933, and were illegal to own until 1964, when they were again made legal to own and spend for $20 etc, but NOT be redeemed for gold.
I have bought $10's and $20's in the past for a dollar over face, but now they are quite a bit pricier in "average circulated"
