Hello all, I am unsure if this piece has been cleaned. I think it has, but some time ago, and has retoned some. But not sure. Any comments/opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am scared to death of it - it's way too nice for a Twenty Cent, so nice one has to step back and evaluate more closely. Especially because the images are on the order of "just good enough to be a potential problem." So let's talk about this one for a bit.

What kind of money would it take to own? Or is it an auction coin?

That's very funny, because I am scared of it also. It is an auction coin, and it really caught my eye because, as you say, it LOOKS really nice. Just came on, who knows where the price will go?
I am questioning if this may be a circulated proof.

There are only two varieties for 1876: different obverses, same reverse http://www.doubledimes.com/1876P-Summary.html

Edit: I decided to remove my variety id as the pictures aren't big enough for me to say with 100% that it was.

Is this on ebay? Any way to get bigger photos?

Double Dimes are almost never found in that good condition. I am not really sure about cleaning, but I would stay away from this coin because it's raw.

Well, I guess that is what concerns me. A coin like this is usually slabbed. It does come with a 14 day return policy, I could rush it through a TPG, and still return it if I wanted to. As you can see, it is very appealing, but it is also very scary.

Yes, MV the coin is on ebay. I agree the pictures don't make it. Also, the link also gives some weight to my instincts regarding this coin being a circulated proof. This is a big help. Thanks!

It doesn't look quite right to me. The head and liberty just look funny. The stars don't look correct either, I would guess it is a fake.

I believe the coin is genuine. It seems to match BF-2. I think I can just see the diagonal die line in the gown above the 6.

My take on the coin is it has been cleaned at some point in the past. The area around the stars especially on the left side look noticeably darker than the fields and the contrast is somewhat sharp. I am not sure whether or not it will grade problem free at a TPG. The luster on the obverse looks a little subdued which could be from the toning or the past cleaning or both. If you bid on it as an mid/high AU details coin, I think you should be safe.

I believe it's been clean, I am also very unsure as to it's authenticity, Lady Liberty looks very cartoonish here, not like the Liberty you normally see. I would pass for sure.

I agree, but she always looks like that on these.....really ugly and silly, drives me crazy.

Looks real to be and I'm sure ebay would back you on the genuine part, but might come back details.

Maybe I'm just not well enough acquainted with 20 cent pieces. I'm used to seeing the Lady Liberty who appears on Dimes and Halfs, who is far more elegant.

Also just as a side note... Maybe this is another result of me not being well versed in 20 cent pieces, but the word Liberty on the shield looks very strange to me.

It looks authentic IMO although there is something definitely wrong with the surfaces, they look unusually rough as if the top layer of the metal has been stripped away.
