Is anybody interested in keeping the 1982 and 1983 nickels? I'm on the fence about whether to keep these or not.

to the forum!

I'd say only keep them if they are uncirculated.

This article should be a good resource.

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the article. I've been collecting for years now but just recently found out about those two dates.

My understanding is that 1982 and 1983 are only special because there were no mint sets released. That means there are less uncirculated coins for that year. Anything that isn't uncirculated is about as common as any other year. So there's nothing special about a nickel from one of these years if it isn't uncirculated. So I don't bother saving them.

As I've read here, because they didn't produce mint sets its more challenging to find MS grade 82s and 83s. As a result it might make sense to save these. I can say from my CRH events that finding them in MS grade is nearly impossible. Lots of AU samples with 2 or 3 steps but few finer. I tend to keep a couple of these for a time trying to replace with better. Good luck on the hunt.

Correct, the 1982 and 1983 finds are only significant in the higher MS grades. Circulated grades are plentiful.
