This should be fun. Please see below, two 1940-P Washingtons. I went out and purchased a "66" as mine came back "65" One of these is one of the four that I got skunked on. Does that make sense? Identical Lighting, Exposure, Shutter Speed, didn't change anything coin to coin. Both in PCGS plastic. One is a 65, one is a 66. I have them cut together in side by side images. Wanna play? It's easy, just pick the better coin. Discussion is welcome. For instance the coin on the left has some yellowish toning. It is not unattractive in hand, and we are pretty sure it has not been dipped. Does the toning hold it back? Or is it a good thing? I have relegated myself to the fact that grading will always be subjective, that I should not get my panties in a bunch over one point on low value pieces. But to get skunked four out of four has me going on just a bit . . . .

I'm not to good at grading Washington quarters, but I would say the one on the right is MS-65. the one on the left is MS-66. I don't know, to me the hair is a tiny more defined on the left side Quarter.

I will say the opposite of what T-BOP said.

The one on the left is MS65, the one on the right is MS66...I'm pretty sure.

Now no fair getting into my head (it's really scary in here . . . ) please try to judge on the merits! The toning would perhaps draw me toward the one one the left. I am not such a fan of bright white, though I can live with white pieces. Pretty much have to, as it is hard to find original Washingtons.

I prefer the one on the right. I think that is the MS-66 just based on hair details obverse and the eagle's neck and feathers on reverse.

I'm not a Washington collector, but I prefer the coin on the left because there some kind of mark on the cheek on the right coin. So my guess is MS66 on left and MS65 on right.

I would want the one on the right. There are a few spots on the obverse of the left one.

I'm guessing they both got a details grade due to cleaning. The one on the right is nice, probably MS 63 if it didn't get smacked for a cleaning and the one on the left would have been around a MS 64 or 65. I've been collecting these for a few yrs now and am finding out the there are a lot of them out there that have been cleaned. I just got one of my best quarters back from ANACS as an MS deatails cleaned. I just can't believe it cleaned, but I guess it is. But on your one on the left, the toning is sometimes caused by cleaning

Both are in "no problem" plastic.

Both show pretty clear cartwheel lustre spud, what makes you think that they've been cleaned?
I agree that the one on the left got 65, and the one on the right got 66

So far it is for the "66" Seven for the right. Two for the left. Fun eh? Let's let it ride a little longer. Pennynickleguy, that mark on the cheek on the right coin is some rub with perhaps a sister coin in the roll. It is not a deep mark, but it is a distraction and in a focal area. But it is not a gouge, etc. The light is catching it "just right".
I am reassessing my photography technique . . . I left all the settings the same so as to provide identical lighting and settings for each coin. I think that might have been wrong. I shot the left coin first, and set shutter speed for that coin and caught a good image. When I use the same setup on the right coin, I got glare and hot spots. Perhaps I should have speeded up the shutter a couple clicks. Or I am overthinking it. The photos capture both coins well enough to play with a point in grade. What say the gallery, should I reshoot that coin on the right? Or is it good enough?

I'll say 66 on left and 65 on right. The one on the right appears to have a little mark on the eagle neck and some abrasion on George's cheek. I am reaching here but 65 left and 66 right is just too easy.
