I have similar scratches on my 1866 IHP its a beautiful coin and has xf details but someone got mad and did that ^to it :(

You have to remember back in the 50's things like that were considered to be worthless by most collectors. Sometimes to the extent of throwing them out in the trash.

I wish I could remember who related the story, but it was a well known numismatist discussing a trip to a coin shop early in the 20th century. The dealer showed him an off-center uncirculated V nickel and said "Isn't that too bad." then clunk tossed it into the trash can.
