I know there are a few slab collectors here when I saw the price that this one sold for I was blown away. Someone wanted this one badly enough. It holds an 1890-CC Tailbar in MS62 and has a CAC sticker. http://www.coinworld.com/news/morga...-holder.html

Why? [Is it dumb]
Isn't it more valid numismatically to collect and study the history of the coin slab [of which this is an important and rare item] and where little primary data exists, than to collect minor varieties of wording on paper labels that purport to show meaningless differences in the time a coin was received by a grading service....

Why not crack out the coin and just sell the plastic holder?

Kinda falls in line with "Doily" labels by PCGS, but these were only produced for a shorter period of time...about 6 months worth.

Once again we get into the same argument.
Provenance vs "buy the coin, not the holder"

To each his own... I know some people who think paying $100 for a penny is crazy!

Quote: Why not crack out the coin and just sell the plastic holder? Because then you would have a SERIOUSLY damaged holder. Kind of along the same lines of "You need an SVDB? Well why don't you buy this one with the big hole in it? It's a lot cheaper that way." Quote: Kinda falls in line with "Doily" labels by PCGS, but these were only produced for a shorter period of time...about 6 months worth. The Doilies were the very short term slabs, a month at best. The Regency was produced for about three years but very few of them were ever made during that period.

Have you not heard of ; Doily holders Old green holders Fatties signature labels first strike label It just goes on. I am surprised there is not 'The Official Red Book of Holders and Labels' I got a Dollar says that it won't be much longer.
