I have inherited my Dad's coin collection. most of his coins came from pocket change and are only worth the sentimental value.

I am going through each coin and doing an inventory spreadsheet. In doing so, I found a 1943-D Lincoln Penny, not too unusual but the date and mint mark seem to have been struck extra hard.

They date & mint look like they are an a plane lower than the surface of the coin, about by the thickness of a cheap business card.

I am going to try to attach a picture. Two things, one: I am new at CCF and two: this is the closest I could get my camera to the penny. I hope you can see it.

Should I take out an insurance policy on it, or is it just another coin.

That's just another coin, now if it were a copper penny from 1943, that would be a different story.

to the community. Hopefully with your new found collection, you get bitten by the collecting bug too.

A steel penny, made from steel during WWII to conserve copper for shell casings for the war effort. Very nice, a part of history. But very common. Worth $2-$3 .

Oh, yes Coincollector, I found a counterfeit copper 1943-D penny. The plating was peeling off and you could see the steel, I'm keeping it just for fun.

Could this coin be an early die state? Or could it have been struck too hard, as they may have needed to compensate for the hardness of steel but may have overcompensated a little?

Nice start for a new collector though. Yet that 1943D is really rather common. Still a nice condition.
