These came into use over just the last couple decades, and were mostly dispensed via special slot machines, hence the plastic case will occasionally be found to be cracked from when it fell into the metal tray. However, even when they remain intact, the plastic cases don't seem to afford as much protection against unsightly tarnishing as you might expect.

For this most common configuration of the genre, the center portion is ½ oz. of .999 silver (typically in a proof finish) while the collar is made of a yellow base metal, possibly gold washed or plated. Some dealers don't bother with these except to punch out the center discs and send them in as scrap silver; others are happy to sell the entire token at a small premium, but there are collectors of these who evidently value them at more than that, and have seriously delved into the technicalities of their manufacture and issue.

See: http://home.comcast.net/~sptokens/marv8.htm

There's also an older thread regarding these:

The one pictured below I very recently picked up at just current melt - I thought it was more than typically pleasing from an aesthetic standpoint and I was intrigued that it was from an rather somewhat remote spot as well (Wendover, if you don't know, is way over on the Nevada-Utah state line).

This is an interesting one, in that it's not associated with a gambling establishment per se. At least with casino gaming tokens, although most were retained, in theory you could use them for betting at a table or cash them in at the window. I'm not sure what you can do with one you win at the airport except keep it as a souvenir.

While these tokens were still current they could have been redeemed at the cashier.

That one's absolutely associated with a "gambling establishment," Lucky Cuss! First time visitors to Las Vegas by air were often surprised to find the opportunity to gamble almost as soon as they stepped off the plane. The McCarran Airport slot machines spawned a lot of jokes along the lines of, "they get you coming and going!"
