I had a moment like that at the Baltimore show a few years back. Bought my first nice piece of copper, an 1818 Large Cent in NGC 63. It cost much more than I'd spent on any coin previously, and I'd been concentrating on Morgans and Sovereigns(!). It was kinda surreal to drop so much cash on copper when none of my big cartwheels cost near as much (common circulated Morgans could be had for $20 on ebay then).

Bought it from Chris McCawley. If you know him, you know I got a good price. Took a bazillion images of the coin, some of my best-ever shots, and flipped it on ebay for a 40% profit.

Yes I know the feeling been there done that. I have bought coins well over a $1000 a few times, my most expensive lately was the Gold Kennedy half from the mint but just lately I passed that when I purchased a 2001 W Capitol $5 Gold MS70 commemorative to add to my registry set. I had saved enough to get it and when I look at the coins I really don't think of the money spent on them.

This is me. The most expensive coin I have purchased, believe it or not, is an Eisenhower dollar: 1971-S DDO FS-103. Because it was in PF65 condition it was "only" $300. It is the 2nd rarest variety of the series. The lower grade was the only way I could afford this coin. The same will hold true for the FS-801 IF I ever find one available.
