I picked this guy up a few weeks ago, and as you can see in the comments for the label it mentions "small recut 6". I am wondering if this is the same variety that coins and Canada lists on their website as "small repunched 6"? http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...ts-1858-1901 .

maybe used recut---lack of space----what a two-bit two man operation solution---maybe it means tooling---disgusting.

I don't know what recut means, but if they intended to label it as the repunched 6 variety, I would have thought they would have labeled (in short form) as: RP6 or 6/6

Interesting points, I didn't think about it possibly being because they ran out of character space in the comments section. I found this comment on another site about what recut means

"In earlier years, when a die which was being used to mint coins became worn so the date did not appear clear, the workers at the mint would "repunch" the date, meaning they would take punch tools with the numbers of the date and try to make the date clearer on the die. Sometimes called "recut" the more common term is "repunched". This practice was also applied to mint marks which were getting worn from use."

Seems to make sense then, I agree with skip79 though, I think it would have been better for them to abbreviate it.

Assuming that in this case the recut does mean repunched I see that the BV is $510 in this grade. Any idea on how the "cleaned" comment would affect its value?

Recut is a proper term, more often seen in describing US or early British coins . I agree repunched is a much better descriptive. I have some ICCS 1945 50 cents that state Repunched 5 spelt out but one with a Cameo said 1945 Rep.5 Hvy. Cameo. They sometimes run out of space I guess. Just Like NGC and Pcgs when they put Newfndlnd on some of their supposedly superior holders.

My personal rule is a minimum 50% reduction in the value of the coin for the 'cleaned' comment. More if it's harshly cleaned, highly visible etc. Many collectors simply won't touch impaired coins at all meaning they trade in a much smaller market.

In my mind, and I took the definitions from Hans Zoell's old pamphlets, the difference between 'repunched' and 'recut' depended upon what tool or correction method that the mint or worker made to the working die. For most digits and letters, the easiest or fastest way was to punch it with a punch and hammer. More exacting and requiring more skill was to recut or clean up the problem with an engraving tool. One slip with the tool, however, made things worse than it started. I think that, in most numismatic venues now, the terms are interchangeable.

Guess it boils down to what the graders personal definition of each term is. I guess it could change from one coin to another.

Really hard to say what you would discount for a negative comment. Sometimes it is minimal and other times you could give me the coin and I wouldn't want it. To say 50 per cent is too general in my opinion.

Thanks for the info okiecoiner! Haha I know it is hard to put a value on a cleaned coin, but I think for rarer varieties they should still hold a fair amount of their value, guess it really depends on the buyer in the end. Personally I don't mind getting cleaned coins, allows me to get some coins that wouldn't otherwise fit in my budget.
