Hi all.. How to clean this. The photograph shows the coin to be more problematic than I originally thought.. I think it has been heavily cleaned in the past.. But anyway - How to remoe the tape residue? I have acetone...

Urk. Acetone should do it as long as you're comfortable with its' use. I'd just set it up for at least an overnight soak the first thing, and not start trying to physically remove the stuff until after that step.

SsuperDdave is correct but, please remember acetone is highly volatile. This is best done outside or in your garage away from any flame. Hope it works.

I agree with 'Urk!', but I felt sorry for her and had to try to help. It does scratch off (with a fingernail), but its tough ANnother question, different coin... - Are all Peace dollars weakly struck around the E Pluribus lettering?.. Thats not a classic wear area?

Go ahead and use the acetone. if your going to soak it for any length of time, do it in fresh air as per bpoc1 suggests . use enough so that it doesn't dry up.

Also if you are going to soak it in acetone, make sure you tightly cap the container because acetone will evaporate in an astonishingly short amount of time! It's not a huge deal since the stuff is cheap, but still....

Make sure that it's pure acetone, and not nail polish remover.

I have always found tape residue to be highly variable. It can be soluble in water, acetone, xylene, etc. You should always follow the polarity ladder when dealing with an unknown because you can never be absolutely sure what solvent it's soluble in. http://www.lincolncentforum.com/for...Conservation

She is done.. and is a 1922-S Came out well. Its obvious she has had a tough life but the tape came off quickly after a soak... I couldn't do much more damage so like the results. And I am loving the close up...

To answer your other question, the strike you're questioning isn't really surprising for Peace dollars. Buy every Peace dollar you see which deserves to be called a "strong strike."

Nice results. You could do it again to get the last of the glue. Just above the ONE. It would/ could be worth a try. Interesting note, I use baby jars with good lids to let them soak in. The good old "Gerber" jars. Picked them up from the grand kids, mom, years ago.
