I knew it was just a matter of time, but a buyer just informed me that the coin he received was not the same as the coin in the picture and was a fake. He sent me a picture of the coin, same coin but clearly not the coin I sent him! I have never seen that coin before.
Any advice?

What's the value of the coin? If it's not a lot I'd probably just refund the money and chalk it up to one of those things. If it's a fair amount of money I'd contact ebay and see what recourse you might have.

I would get out ahead of it and contact ebay. Also, just double check with the buyer and make sure he did not confuse someone else's package with yours.

How does their feedback look? ( I know it's going to say 100%) but are there any indications in feedback from sellers that anyone had problems? Does this person leave feedback for sellers? what vibe do you get from reading those? Try to read between the lines. Are they a new buyer? seasoned veteran? also look at the items they have bid on in the last 30 days. log out, and search for your item #, then look at the bids and click on the winning persons bid. see if they bid on a coin similar to yours and maybe did the switch. there might be a clue in there. If nothing stands out, talk to CS @ ebay just so they have the info. Have the buyer return the coin, and after examining it, the best you can do is to click on report a buyer so there is a record of it. all I can think of, maybe others have some pointers. I hope it was not an expensive coin. It's very difficult, buyers seem to have a big advantage and they tell sellers it's the cost of doing business. grrrrr

You guys are good. His profile looked real good, so I contacted him about a possible mixup on his end. It looks like that may be it! I don't think he has even received it yet. Also, only $75 so we'll see.

Sounds like the buyer is a bit confused in the noggin.

Sounds good, let us know the outcome. It seems he did not open a case and just clicked "other" as a reason to message you through ebay. so that is a plus. If a case was opened or "request" as they now call it, make sure you get it removed. but it sounds like your ok.

He has informed me that it was his mistake and has apologized. A case was not opened, so it looks like all is good. I had quite a scare, though!

Yet this is one more reason I keep away from ebay.

That's why I videotape myself sealing coins in their packages. No one can refute that evidence. Also, make a scribble on a plain part of the package to show that the package in the video is the same one received by the buyer.

At least I know that the package was delivered. If there are any questions about delivery, or when something arrives, that inexpensive form of proof is nice to have.

Doesn't prove a darn thing after that. Someone could easily package the coin then repackage another the same way. It doesn't protect you one bit.

That may be so, but the more important thing is will ebay accept it as reliable evidence? No matter anyone's opinion, it's ebay that get's the final say.
