I just found a 1997-p nickel while rolling up some change and I was wondering if all of the 1997-p nickels have a matte finish? I have some a few searches and it seems like they only came in the matte finish.

The 1997 P matte proof nickel was only released in the Botanic Garden Coinage & Currency Set with a mintage of only 25,000. It'd be pretty rare to find one in circulation considering there were almost 500 million regular business strike 1997 P nickels, but I guess not impossible.

Thanks for the quick answer. It looks like a normal nickel, but I had to make sure.

In 1997 the Mint produced 3 different kinds of finishes for the nickel:

The regular strikes for circulation (470,972,000) with the "P" mintmark.

The Matte Finish nickels that were put in the Botanical Gardens Sets (25,000) with the "P" mintmark.

The Proof sets (2,796,678) with the "S" mintmark.

Hope this helps you out!
