So apparently I have the gold bug now. What do you guys think of this 1928? Thanks a ton and I look forward to getting opinions. I know this series is always tough to grade.

You're not lyin' these are tough to grade. I'm calling yours AU63, and sticking you with deciding whether it has wear or not.

Seriously, I lean toward thinking it Mint State based on the obverse but in that below-64 grade range where premiums over melt are fairly small.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. Even looking at Photograde I can't decipher any difference between the low to mid MS grades. The only spot I notice much wear on mine is the high points of the headdress, but even the MS examples seem to have that. Fields are nice and clear though. Love this coin but hate grading it.

The 9 o clock area on the reverse looks like it has some wear as well? Definitely a tough one to grade but a beauty as well

I think that spot is just the lighting. I'm not seeing that when I don't have that glare on the coin. I think I've decided to go ahead and ship it off to NGC to get a grade on it. Either way for what I paid for it I'm thrilled.

Tough call on grading. If you're financially in the black with a final retail value of $300-ish in a slab, go ahead and submit it. If you receive a Mint State grade, all the better.

You can only get the gold bug if you can afford the gold bug! I wish I had the gold bug.

Absolutely! After all grading fees I'm still under $300 in this coin so thought I would take the chance. This is my first gold ever and will probably be the last one for a while : )

I got the bug too. I have looked at a few of these and keep hearing how I should be able to get them at a small premium to spot. I just have not had luck with that. You say you are in under $300 but the coin only has $150 in gold so that is not a small premium. I guess I will keep watching for these. Even the $5 are going for $600 plus on commons and that too is not a small premium. So far the $20 Double Eagles are the coins I have been buying because those I have found in MS62/63 for about 10% over spot.

Yeah the premiums are definitely a little higher on these ones but I love the design.
