Nice coin for the price. AU but over dipped in my opinion.

Hard to go too wrong for the price. I think you did ok. It's a tough series to find great deals on. Lots of interest in Morgans. There are some nice holdered examples for not too much more $.

Yeh, sometimes I get close to a deal and sniped with a second to go by some seasoned buyer. Hard to get a deal I noticed in that series. Other series I am interested in I get all kinds of great deals. I like that the eagle has it's breast feathers and there appears to be luster. They sell fast though, I sold some that were crappy with black stuff and a rim ding and sold in 5 minutes for more than this. I did good on this one, came in a lot where I flipped a Morgan and Peace dollar probably didn't pay much.

The 1896 is nicely bought. Looks like an older obverse die mated to a fresher reverse. The obverse would drive the TPG opinion but the reverse more accurately reflects the actual level of wear.

No problem with the price. An interesting aspect of this particular issue is that the prooflike specimens can have atypical "milky" fields (albeit still sufficiently reflective) that exhibit nominal contrast with the devices, so they photograph poorly and aren't always recognized for what they are. I have two of this ilk in my collection. When you get it in hand, you may end up being pleasantly surprised in actually having gotten something more than you bargained for.

The coin as you suspected, looks better in hand. It appears to have more a gold tone and more luster. It is shinier but have to look closer to see if it is PL. I will do a high resolution scan soon to take a look how it appears. I was just looking at the reverse, it looks shiny and the background is kind of cloudy with a slight gold tint, maybe the 2x2. The details in the reverse are striking without any appearance of wear. What are interesting are the lines going across the top of the Eagles wings.

Here is a scan of the same coin. What would you grade it? You can click the picture for a larger view.

XF-AU details cleaned. Maybe the scans are making it look super dull.

Scans do this coin a disservice, and are almost impossible to derive an accurate grading from.

Looks dipped out from the pics but that may not reflect the coin in hand. XF/AU.

Look at the picture from the ebay listing. I don't think this is a details coin and doesn't appear to be cleaned. I am certainly not one to slap the cleaned label on every coin unless it is obvious. Read up on the thread for the explanation of it looking dull.

AU-50 and possibly a details grade for the rim damage on reverse.

I don't see wear that necessarily bounces it down into the AU range, certainly not as low as AU50 in any event. I'd expect it to come back graded "Uncirculated Details" if the aforementioned rim damage is considered to be severe enough.

Huh, yes I did see the rim ding but I have seen much worse. I unloaded a Morgan before with a rim ding before after people at the NGC said to. I certainly would not agree with the grades given as well, especially as low as XF45 details cleaned. The mod here mentioned this was a good deal at $27 but apparently some here would disagree. I personally think it would be higher AU.
