Hello, I recently fell for the "estate sale" on ebay. You know, the ones where you get "one coin made during WW2, one coin over 100 years old, etc." Obviously I found out they are pretty much a scam. One coin I got was this "ancient coin over 2000 years old". Any idea what it is? I can barely make out the front at all and the back looks like it is an angel with wings. Any idea what this is and if it has any value at all? Thanks in advance!

The inscription seems to be in Greek, please make better pictures (no need to waste space around the coin).

Can you take a clearer picture of just the coin? I can't make out the obverse at all.

Does this help at all? Even in Macro mode it gets blurry, I don't know if my camera is good enough for a close picture. This is a small coin.

I can't make out the portrait at all. Not sure if it is trying to be an Arcadius. Need bigger, clearer photos, preferably out of the packet, unless you are going to send it back.

If you have a multi-function printer, use the scanning option - works very well with coins.

The closer and clearer the image the better. This is a late Roman bronze (LRB) of the emperor Arcadius as Pish stated. Arcadius 383-408, so the coin is not quite 2000 years old. They are very common.

Is it trying to be this one? Arcadius AE4. D N ARCADIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / SALVS REI-PVBLICAE, Victory advancing left holding trophy over right shoulder and dragging captive. Mintmark: ANT G, field left: chi-rho. BUT we need to the the legend properly and also the portrait.

I think echizento is right. Especially if you look at the second picture on the link below. http://numismaclub.com/unt/34624-ae...l_coin_.htmlAccording to that site its worth about $20, maybe not in the shape mine is in though. Thanks for all the quick replies!

Yes, 'echizento' is definitely right - can read the "CADIV" clearly.
For $20 you should easily be able to get a better one than the one shown at that link.

Your coins value is under $5 but a cool piece of history nonetheless.

If anything it was a good lesson not to buy any of those odd "lots" on ebay where you don't know exactly what you are getting(just vague indicators that you will get one BU, one over x years, etc). I also got a few vials of gold flakes, a civil war bullet, arrow head, and a crappy condition 1847 one cent coin as my "bonuses." Maybe I can throw all that stuff in a lot on ebay to get a few bucks back. It appears everything is authentic, just in bad condition. I don't know how to confirm the gold flakes though, and their value looks to be very low.

$20? You're silly. My example of this type was bought for less than $5, and apparently still overpaid for: (I've since got a much better one for $7 - I'm obviously using pre-December rates here - but don't have a separate photo) EDIT: Even the 1847 cent is more valuable, most likely.

The 1847 cent is certainly more valuable. It might be worth a whole $5-10 :-)
