Unfortunately I do not have better pictures of this 1838 cent. Sorry about that. These were taken with my old camera and are not optimal - but even so, you can still see some hints of mint bloom on this coin. I would much appreciate your comment on its grade. If anybody wants to take a shot at the Newcomb number that would be great also. I am totally useless when it comes to attributing late date large cents.

I think AU53 because the stars aren't well defined but if you think differently, please explain why.

Do I see a fairly prominent die scratch from the leaf to the base of the F in OF? That would make this one N-2. I see just the slightest bit of circulation here. Perhaps not AU58 but certainly a strong 55.

Late die state maybe? The stars look flat and smooth, but not from wear. I'm thinking from a worn die.
Can't really tell from the pics, but maybe a bit of microgranularity taking away from luster on the obverse. Could just be chatter though. Reverse looks more cartwheeled.

I have it at AU55 I think the weak obverse holds it back a little. My dream is to someday travel to Germany and spend a day with you and your collection

I don't see any wear and the luster (not well imaged, admittedly) seems consistent from the open fields to the protected areas between stars and letters. The stars are weakly struck, not worn. Looks mint state to me, with no significant marks. Grade would be limited by strike and the possible weak luster but MS-63 does not seem unreasonable. Another lovely piece from Germanicvs!
