Am learning to use my new Epson 4490 scanner. These are the results with little adjusting of the pics.

Gold:

Any thoughts on how to do a better job would be greatly appreciated. Also, it does appear that it will do what I wanted it to do which is allow me to get a quick pic to post. When I want to really show a high quality coin I will setup the camera.

Thx, Jim

Ok your scanner has a problem with its colourbalance

My nearly ten year old photoscanner does an internal calibration of RGB whenever it feels like it
I really do not know what triggers the autocalibration
So you may want to look at the booklet and find out if you got a calibration or RGB adjusment or colorspace adjusment etc

Failing this try putting gamma to 1.18 and use a blue background for copper and gold and maybe a darkgray one for silver
When I bought the scanner the photospecialist who used it for a few years put the gamma to 1.18 theoretically it should be between 1.8 and 2.4 depending whether you use a IBM compatible or a MAC

Since it works so well I never touched the gamma
I only fiddle with light and contrast

Thx, ageka. I will get the book out tonight and go to work. After I make the adjustments I will post some more examples. I would not of thought to put a background color on the bed of the scanner, but it sure makes sense.

The natural background on my scanner is what they call a black trap
It is totally absorbant of any light whatsoever
Since I mainly scan yellow to orange gold and since the complementary color is blue to violet I insert a sheet of reddish blue on all my scans
Apart from some very high reflection no diferentiation in contrast coins like the Maple leaf that works very well
