When I get cash from my credit union, I usually get circulated currency, but sometimes I get crisp new bills. Whenever I do, the new bills have black ink stains in the same place on the edge. It's as if the stack of new currency were getting a thick black stripe marked on the edge of the brick of bills with a magic marker. Is my credit union doing this, or is this done earlier in the distribution process? Is this common, or am I just unlucky? I've been noticing this for several months now.

I see the same thing on my currency, every time I take money out of the ATM. Its not just the local ATM at my bank, I receive these all over.
Maybe the banks do this to keep track or count the stacks of money they receive from the Federal Reserve.

I'm pretty sure that they use different colors on the bills in straps of 100. This is becuase they can not have the paper money strap in the ATM so they use colors to be able to do a quick count to see how much money is in there. I'm not entire sure but I think this is what my bank teller told me.

The mark on the edge is common. Cartridges for ATM's have huge stacks of currency in them. It is common to write relevant information directly on the edge of the bills such as quality control markings. I have two $20 bills with missing first printing, but with this same mark on the edge. Sucks because they would otherwise be pristine.

I see the stain on the $1 bill and I don't know what happened there. I thought that you were talking about the colored markings on the side of the bill.
Did that came directly from a $100 strap or do you just think it looks as if it did?

it looks just like a discoloration. Nothing special there

I finally got my teller supervisor to stop marking the bills.
What happens is that there is a large amount of cash in an ATM and it does have to be counted and balanced at least weekly. What a lot of banks do is for each strap of 20's and 10's they take a marker and put the line on the top of all the bills so that they can see where each strap starts and stops. There are other ways to keep track of these straps in the canisters but the easiest and fastest way to tell is by the marks on them.
It use to just kill me every time I would have to watch this process be done on nice new currency, but at least I got it to stop at my bank.
