am curious! How should a very old coin, which has been in someone's pant pocket for years and years as "good luck" coin, be graded. Coin is not cleaned as in "cleaning'. coin is not whizzed or polished. coin has a simply natural appearance caused by a very normal action in someone's pocket. How would a TPG mark it. remember, NOTHING wrong was done to it!

I'd call this a loaded question that will raise many more questions. Suffice to say it would be circulated to start.

Why would it not be graded as any other circulated coin? Even if it was well worn, it could still have a G or VG grade.

The first thing would be, what condition was the coin in prior to the years in pocket! Also was it in a pocket with other items to create marks and or damages of sorts.
This is strictly a theoretical exercise or is there a coin this topics about?

yes, both right... but with that kind of regular wear in ones pocket, this will be one heck of a shiny coin! looking like a polished coin, very well worn.

very true, however only on the areas where contact was made and allowed with the pocket material, be it the actual pocket and or items in the pocket.
With that in mind there would be a very good chance the coin would come back with a notation as being cleaned IMO.

alone in the pocket (getting polished nice and shiny) = TPG cleaned in the pocket with coins, keys etc = TPG no "details" noted now... let's see the coin !

A better question............If it was in the same pocket for all that time what grade is the pocket ? My bet would be TB1 or TB2...........thread bare 1 or 2 !!!! A pocket piece is graded exactly the same as any other coin, on its merits, not where its been.

Pocket coins are normal circulated coins ---could even be graded as harshly cleaned--pocket with sand granules.

lambcolin, yes, they are regular circulated coins. but they were in an environment which constantly subjected them to soft and moving contact. Hence their polished look. However, they were not cleaned in the sense of cleaning. So, the term cleaned or any derivative of it is not correct. cotton or similar is softer than metal. hence NO hairlines or other traces caused by harsh or any cleaning.

It personally drives me nuts when someone adds cleaned to the grade when the coin grade is lower then fine. A heavily circulated coin has seen it all. This pocket coin, was it never accidently left in the pocket, maybe has had a trip or two in a wash machine. If the coin shows harsh parallel lines then that's different. I would prefer the coin to have a good clean if it spent a lifetime in a guys pocket.😝
