As I have mentioned in other posts, I'm making a 100 year birth set for my son. 1911 p coins from cent to quarter eagle for now...when I strike it rich he might get half eagle and eagle and double eagle later So I was admiring some of the early coins on this site and it occurred to me, why not make a 200 year birth set too? Oh, I know why...cause I can't afford it So I think I can step out and get one 1811 coin for starters and see where that takes me. If you could only get one coin from this time period, specifically 1811, what coin best represents that coinage time period. I'm looking for ideas in the $200.00 range that really nails it on the head. What coin and grade should I be looking for? Thanks for your help.

You'll be able to find an acceptable Bust Half that fits your date and price.

For $200, you can't go wrong with a nice Bust Half. Large and silver. For me, I'm sort of fond of the Half Eagle: ET

If you guys don't mind me taking over my own thread, I want to ask your opinions. I looked on ebay to get an idea of whats out there. Very scary. So I went to Heritage Auctions to see what they have. Found this one and I don't know what "Strk Rmvd" means. Strike removed? Thats all I could come up with, and still I don't know what that would mean. Is that why it's XF details? Or was it cleaned too? Do you think this is about $200 coin or can I do better? Thank you for looking.

I'm particularly fond of Half Cents. But don't think about 1811 Half Cents. That's the key date for the Classic Head design business strikes. Even coins graded Good will exceed your current wallet. And they are noted for generally being on porous planchets.

I've always thought that designation to be "streak removed."
A Bust Half is probably your only affordable choice. Look for a "Details" coin with about low XF detail - higher level of detail at that price means a more disfigured coin - or an honest VF25 if you find a good deal. You will have knowledgeable competition for the coin because this issue has dedicated fans. Examples which languish on the market do so for a reason.

As a large cent collector for $200 you might be able to afford an 1811 large cent.

Heh. 1811 Large Cents are so tough that Col. Ellsworth only has 5 in stock at Butterworth, and he has so much copper you can almost gauge relative rarity by looking at his inventory.

I would recommend a nice, original surface 1811 bust half in a PCGS or NGC holder VF-35 to XF-45. If it is from a reputable dealer at an affordable price, it means more than likely it is a common Overton die variety. In your case, that would be to your advantage for affordability.

Yes - "Strk Rmvd" means a streak/stain was removed from the coin's surface by some type of cleaning or processing, and is obvious enough to preclude the grading service from giving the coin a "problem-free" numeric grade. DoubleEagle is right, you can find a nice VF to EF Bust Half for under $200 to answer the mail.
