Hey guys, in preparation for a move I found a 1992 Columbus commemorative set that I apparently bought in 1992 (who knew?). They're proof coins, but in looking them up online I saw the various grades that proofs can receive, and I honestly didn't realize that proof coins in their original casing could have different grades (though it makes sense when I think about it).

I wasn't sure if this was the place to ask about grading these coins, or whether I should have gone to the modern coins grading section -- so if I erred, I'd appreciate the moderators moving this thread.

Are these pictures good enough to tell how good these coins are? Or is the plastic interfering, at least via photo? The scuff on the half dollar obverse, for example, right above the word "Columbus" is the plastic not the coin. It really is a beautiful coin. Thanks. (Some of the scuff marks are actually on the plastic container the coins came in. And ther's a reflection at one point that looks like a double strike, sadly it is not :)

Most modern commemorative proof issues in original government packaging will grade PR68 or higher ... the distinction being those pesky 'minor scratches'.

Impossible to grade your via photograph ... need clear photos of the coins surfaces .... even then it's very difficult to distinguish between the lofty grades without the coin in hand.

Nice to find those again!

You got it right. All US Commemorative discussion goes here.

I am glad you found you missing set!
