Perhaps you can help me . 'Gandophares' reigned (20-10BC) in the Indo Parthian Kingdom. I believe he was from the house of Suren - Balochistan. More than that I cannot find. AE11.5 2.06 gm Can anyone give me some more information on my coin, please? Edited by Topcat7 02/03/2015 7:46 pm

The coin reminds me more of Rajuvula, are you sure about the attribution? But wait what others have to say.

I was worried that (someone) was going to say that, Med. That is one of the reasons that I am hoping someone will come up with more information. The coin was sold to me as Gondophares, but now that it is 'in hand' I (too) am leaning towards someone else (possibly Rajuvula). see http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/in...opic=13696.0 I have (definitely) no expertise in this area. 'Floundering' would be a good description of what I am doing, right now.

Quote: Whom did you buy it from? I really can't tell you. Although I have only been collecting 'Ancients' for six months, I have over 600 coins. All I can say is that it came in a 2x2 with 'Gondophares' written on it.

You can't tell us? Why? If someone told you not to tell anyone who you got it from they might be stolen.
I believe the coin is Gandophares.

Sorry. I didn't make it 'plain'.
The reason that I cannot tell you is that I do not recall buying it. I know nothing of the ruler, and I can only believe that I bought it on the strength of the photo of the Obv. and the price, and probably because if I had already purchased something else, then the postage would have been 'free'.
I went through my records (what I have) and I couldn't find it.

WOW, 600 coins? WOw! Did you buy an uncleaned lot or did you hand select pieces or buy out an entire inventory, all of which is cool. Ah, at least we can rule out the stolen possibility. And I have been collecting for 15 years.

I've been collecting for years and have just under 700 coins. That is a nice collection for just six months.

I think the Gondophares attribution is correct, Topcat. I base this on a few things: the depiction of the ear as a prominent curve, the two straight diadem ends, and mostly based on the monogram on the reverse, which matches other Gondophares coins that are currently online. See pics...these are all Gondophares. The second pic includes a detail of the monogram on your coin and a few others.

600 coins in 6 months...that's pretty awesome TC. you know, I'm not sure how many coins I have. I would guess about 300 ancient coins. About 200 modern coins. here a coin I purchased within 6 months of starting my collection, got it for a buck. I have it attributed as sases, but am not sure how I can about that attribution. my photography has improved a bit in the last two years....thank goodness.

Bob, Thank-you for your most comprehensive answer. Based on what you have pointed out, my uncertainties have dissipated and I am happy to attribute the coin as a 'Gondophares'.
Thanks Ski - you were right. Down to Bob.
To everyone else - it is not hard to wind up with 600 coins in six months if you buy junk. One lot of 80 'to be cleaned', a couple of lots of 10 or less, and the balance individual purchases. Within that junk I do, however, have a couple of nice coins.
I am in the process of going through them all to sort the 'wheat from the chaff' and that is how I came up with this coin, which, (by the way), I shall keep.
'PishPash' is helping me to catalogue the ones that I will keep. 'Ancients' are a totally different proposition to 'Moderns', and I am extremely grateful of her assistance in this regard, and also your assistance (when needed) in 'attributing' them.
Now that I have survived the initial 'enthusiasm' for the new project, I can settle down to a 'less quantity, more quality' approach. "No, TIF. You have nothing to fear. With a family of 8 to feed, and a collection of 8 cars 'on the road', and no income to speak of, (retired), there's precious little left for collecting coins." ( I shall look at mine and dream of yours.)

Hi, Chris, I can see why you would go Sassanian, but I will leave it to someone else.
