I recently purchased this Persian siglos and I was wondering whether it was a Carradice Type IIIa because of what appear to be two pellets behind the beard? (see http://www.forumancientcoins.com/nu...key=siglos).

I'm not sure if that's what the pellets are supposed to look like. The seller said it weighed 5.45 grams which is slightly heavier than Type IIIa according to the link above, but there is an indentation in the side with some form of encrustation that could be making it heavier. I don't have coin scales myself (I need to get some.)

Many thanks if anyone can help.

Your link didn't work. I don't know enough about this type to say for sure, but this might help. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/nu...p?key=siglos

Sorry, can't make a judgement on that. A clearer picture of the obverse would be nice. Btw, you need to leave a space after a URL, otherwise the link does not work properly.

Here is my siglos. I was looking for a IIIa in particular. I found one being offered by a very reputable dealer in Beverly Hills. I purchased it came to the same conclusion as yourself. My siglos is a tad heavy for the type and in the state of preservation it should in theory be heavier. I dont doubt the authenticity of my piece or the correctness of the site stated above. I belong to the school of thought that the weight constraint has a greater tolerance than what is previous believed and these coins were minted at several mints, not just Sardis, Lydia or Susa as is the current broad understanding.
