Morning folks! I've recently drastically pared down my Canadian coin collection and have branched out into UK pre-decimal silver coinage. For the moment I've started building up a small collection of 20th century half-crowns, with the intention of moving backwards and eventually acquiring a decent example of a hammered half-crown.
I'm wondering if anyone can recommend 3 or 4 good reference books on the topic - they can be "standard" references, auction catalogs with good photography or museum catalogs. Google has shown no concrete direction, so I'm hoping for the collective knowledge and experience of CCF to yield some results.
Thanks in advance!

I'm using Coins of England and the UK by Spink 2013 edition.

You won't need spink at least if you intend to specialize. There is another book in the pipeline.

This is EXCELLENT, thank you so much!
Just so I'm clear, is Spink a more generalized reference for all UK coinage up to the publication date (a price guide, similar to Canada's Charlton guide), while the others are specific to silver coinage only? Since I posted this morning, I've come across references that are specific to certain denominations (the groat, for instance), but I think this list will be enough to get me moving and whet my appetite for more.
Please feel free to make more suggestions, I'm very much of the opinion of "buying the book before the coin". Thanks again!

I use Coincraft's (1998) 'Standard catalogue of English and U.K. Coins 1066 to Date'. Catalogue prices a bit out of date, but still a good guide. The pre decimal section comprises 623 Krause cat. sized pages. Lots of information on each type of issue including Maundy and proof sets, collecting hints on each type, and what to look for, for each type. Published by Krause Publications.
Standard U.K. coinage was the only official circulating coinage in Australia from 1825 to 1910, and as such, is a major and integral part of Australian coinage history.

The Coincraft catalogue is excellent and I still regularly use it - I also buy a new Spink catalogue every 4 or 5 years.

Spink only lists a few varieties and their pricing is based on common coins (especially hammered) I get a copy every few years. If you really want to thrash a type it isn't helpful. Coincraft is an excellent ref and I appreciate the work and comments that went into this. The internet has opened a can of worms.

Well I certainly didn't mean to open a can of worms. ;)
I also registered at Predecimal.com, that should provide a few hours of reading on the topic. Thanks again, folks!
