This counterfeiting business is getting scary not only for collectors but it must be causing great concern with TPG companies and coin dealers. I can see a law suit brewing like a smoldering cauldron in a witches den. The onus is really going to be on them to provide some level of assurance but if TPG are being fooled and no product control at ebay, where is the comfort level for a collector shelling out major bucks? Education yes, more time devoted for research yes, more stickers on the slabs and baggies ? "Tread softly into the dark night friends...."

As a collector, I have been around coins for 40 years or so. The best defense against fakes is experience. You should grow your knowledge of fake coins as you grow your knowledge of coins generally.
Experience comes in many aspects: -Handling fake coins -Know your seller -Know how fakes are made -Know how fakes are detected -Get to know experienced dealers auctioneers and collectors around you. -Buy as much reference material on fake coins as possible. -Maintain a fake coin collection to become familiar with fake coins.
Each of these aspects can be expanded into many points.

I agree with SEL above.
Education and experience is the ONLY way to avoid being ripped off.

If Mikey (nickelsguy) gives a talk in your area, sit down and listen. He's been at it with the fakers for years now. He got a dedicated guy at the RCMP involved, stopped a lot of the crap coming from ebay, and helped get fake stuff put into the Hobby Act in the US. If he posts on here that something is a fake, then take that to the bank.

Seems like the wild west out there, e-bay, kijiji, many sellers, counterfeiters. Must be aware of purchasing and when a deal smells, walk away. Temporary storefronts are gone in an instant. There are so many looking to separate us from our cash. I try to buy only from reputable sellers, but they can be fooled as well. Education is the key. Wouldn't it be nice if the criminal justice system got involved. Harsh penalties for selling this crap. Provide a big disincentive for the production and sales of contraband. It is a hit on the economy, no doubt and a large threat to the hobby as a whole. It is a mess. We are policing ourselves, outing the sellers on e-bay and sending the information across the forums, what about those who are not informed, they get ripped off.

Hey I like and with all of your of your opinions, especially knowledge of how coins are produced and overall experience! I am actually surprised with how counterfeits are becoming so well initiated with the banknotes sector. I often look at the counterfeit notes and question if they are counterfeit or not. I believe it is just to hard to nail someone for selling a counterfeit, because the seller could be innocent and buy it from his trusted buyer, then the trusted buyer purchases at a mistake.

fellows There is a simple solution. as easy as 1-2 3.It does take some effort on our part. But it is much too easy , so it probably will not happen. unless we all do a lot! and here is how: 1 all of you write to every MP in this country, including Stephen, complaining about the RCMP not upholding the law when asked. Oh, what law? The law that possession is illegal. there is big section in the Criminal code. 2 then you get other collectors and friends to do the same through your coin club or friends.3 then you write again 1 month later. This time asking for the Customs form to be changed AND THE FOLLOWING QUESTION TO BE INCLUDED: Did you acquire forged coins or currency while out of the country or are you having such items shipped? : yes " No The penalty for simple possession of forged monetary instruments is up to 15 years in prison. If someone says yes, it will be confiscated, if they say no and have some: through the book at them… hard! They had a choice of saying yes. It is up to CBSA to intercept these items and lay the appropriate charges right at the border. But instead they rather spend tons of time and money, justifying their efforts pursuing a traveler who has an extra ½ liter of scotch. one of us would have to write a basic form letter and give it to us. YES, it will "cost us a bit of time snd a few stamps..... is that too much to ask? At least we can all say that we are trying instead of constantly ing and complainig about it. I already wrote to my MP 2 years ago... he di not even respond. but, when thousands do it.......think about it! I believe it is an election year! so lets also bombard the other Candidates..... not just the dictatorial party in power.. I believe this is the only way we might get better results.

Worldwide problem alright and it covers everything you can and cant imagine. Why? Because the world market place has plenty of room for them and its legal to produce them in some countries. China and Turkey are leaders in counterfeiting everything from toothpaste, your drugs, running shoes, computer parts, airplane parts, watches, purses and the list goes on forever and dont forget about counterfeit high end cars. To much money at stake and plenty of bigwigs involved so how do you take it down? Because there is so much money at stake it will end up like the useless 'war on drugs' money talks.

47P7, the issue would be if you throw the book at someone because he does not check the yes box, but is legitimately unaware he has fakes (received in change or otherwise) now you are punishing the innocent.
I have not been collecting as long as some on here, and when I see people posting pictures and asking if these are real or fake, its hard for me to tell. just imagine someone who does not give a rats behind about coins, if they would be able to tell.

I think a seperate section for 'counterfeits and fakes' would be an asset for us all here. Not only will it help us train our eye and prevent costly mistakes but it would help back up fellows like 'nickelsguy' in his never ending fight against crime.

I brought up the idea of a separate thread for counterfeits and an area where people could post sources (be it ebay or otherwise) of fake coins. It was shot down by the forum admins.

I guess it might be a tough forum I could see a lot of possible problems/arguments/locked threads stemming from it in the beginning. Although I think it would iron itself out eventually. Certainly would be a learning experience for all...lol

ying yang.. A the traveler is being asked on the form if they acquired any. They would know. B how do you get Canadian currency as change when out of the country? You would have to purposely ask for it. OR go to a place where you know u can get what u are after. (oh yes, I know places in HKG) C it would be as easy for CBSA to detect a fake as it is to detect .05 grams of cannabis or whatever. D and they could simply ask!! as a routine question. right? they ask a ton of "unrelated" fishing questions anyway when u are directed to secondary for your declared extra 1/2 liter of scotch. I did not post my suggestions to look for arguments about details of ifs and whens and buts. I did post it as a suggestion for us to become instrumental the ONLY way we have to do something about it as a huge numismatic group and not as individuals. I am certain we could get other forums involved also.
ALMOST ALL FAKES COME FROM OTHER COUNTRIES AND THE CUSTOMS FORM WOULD BE A HUGE DETERRENT. If anyone has a better way to get a solution, please post it! However, we always have the option to continue complaining to each other... I guess that is easier than to get a bit involved...

Good luck guys. As long as people make money, they'll keep counterfeiting. Hard to teach ethics.

How many fake, and even high quality copied products of all sorts, (of which coins are an almost negligible part by proprotion), are imported into the Country by both legal and illegal means?
