I recently picked up a die proof of a vignette engraved by Charles Burt, one of the most prolific bank note engravers of the late 19th century. According to a catalog of his work, this vignette, entitled "Art and Science" was done for the Canadian Bank Note Co. but there's no notation of it's usage.

Does anyone recognize this from a CBNC security -- currency, stock, bond, etc.? I'd be interesting in learning more about it.

I don't think It was used on any Banknote.
Might have been used on stock or bond certificate though.

Could have been used for prototyped bills.

Nice design would have looked nice on some currency.

Found it! It was used on a Canada Bank Note advertising note from the 1880s.

Glad you found what it was used for.
Too nice a picture to go to waste.
Can you supply a picture of it?

I had forgotten about this thread until it was moved to the new Canadian sub-forum. And, yes, I can supply a photo ... only 3+ years late.

This is from page 46 in "The International Engraver's Line" by Gene Hessler. It's the only place I've ever seen this particular engraving illustrated.

I would dearly love to find one of these advert sheets from 1888, however, I do have one from 1892. Canada Bank Note Co. was a very short-lived enterprise and lasted only about a decade, closing shop in the early 1890s. But they did produce some very nice commercial banknotes during that time.
