I have been collecting and buying/selling for a few years, and am starting to hone in on Indian Head cents. I have a Cherry Pickers Guide, but haven't purchased the attribution guide yet. My question is how do I determine value of varieties that aren't published in the Cherry Pickers Guide? I just bought this 1880 that I believe is a snow-3f which was attributed last year by Richard snow and submitted by one of the cc members. Is there a number somewhere for premium over book value of a non variety coin? Thanks

I have wondered about that also and I don't believe there is an easy answer. Snow does have 5 star rating system for all his varieties in his attribution guide, with 1 star worth 2X premium up to 5 stars with a 10X premium. The assignment of stars is based on rarity and desirability of the variety, but even he admits the assignments are vague and open to market interpretation.

I think a better option is to look at completed sales on ebay, Heritage etc. Unfortunately, for a lot of varieties there is not a lot information available.

Basically, it comes down to assigning a value to the coin without the premium, and then look at the rarity and collector interest in the variety and try to come up with a premium and what you think is a fair price and reasonable for the variety.

In his latest attribution guide the 1880 3f has a 1 star which he states,

should get a slight premium, probably no more than 2X

Ok thanks. What kind of grade is the 1880 in your opinion? I haven't dealt with higher grade indians in a while.

I'm no pro in grading Indian Head cents however, if you post larger images in the classic coin grading forum http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...FORUM_ID=134 members will look and give their opinion on what they'd grade it.
