Hi folks. looking at a couple of my mercs and noticed a srange apendage to the branch on the reverse of the 1940 Mercury dime. Is it an error . Or any idea as to what it could be?

Thanks

It appears that the branch took a hit that moved the metal to that shape, after years of ware the hit that caused it has faded leaving what you see today.

My first thought was that it took a hit, too.

But then I thought it might be a lamination error.

Is it possible to tell on a coin that is worn?

Lamination's can be seen on coins with this much wear but that definitely is post mint damage. Something pointed clipped the side of the branch and pushed the metal outward just as the dollarman said.
