A well circulated large cent from 847 AD.
Newcomb number, anyone?

Just a Grease Filled Die or a strike through error. I just can't tell the Newcomb number from coins less than EF/AU, in the Late date series, maybe others can, but I find the diagnostics to confusing, much as I've tried.

Thanks westcoin, a Greaser is much more likely than a pre-Viking mint date

Huh, I take back my earlier comment, I am not sure about this one with the little scratches around where the one was.

To me, the area appears indented which would indicate the 1 was intentionally removed post mint.
For what reason, I don't know.
That's just my opinion.

Best intro line for a thread of 2015, so far.

Thanks all! This is one of my Dad's coins, put away over 40 years ago. One regret I have is throwing away the little yellow envelopes he labeled and kept his coins in.

All kidding aside, with the indentation I'm inclined to think it's a strikethrough. That or a deliberate removal, which would have been a painstaking task to accomplish without marring the bust or denticles.

If the 1 was deliberately removed it would have had to been done shortly after it left the Mint as that area matches the surrounding surfaces, otherwise you would see scratch marks or some sort of smoothing which would give the area a different texture to the surrounding surfaces.

It could be a significant error if a grading service determines it was a strike through or Grease Filled Die.

Gyrene, I agree. I'm sure the 1 wasn't removed, the surface doesn't show any evidence of that.

As to the Newcomb number.... Sorry, but no. The 1 and its position relative to the bust and nearest denticle are one of the few ways to attribute late Braided Hair cents. To complicate matters 1847 has 40 distinct die marriages. So,while not entirely impossible to attribute, the task would be daunting. Maybe if I'm bored later I might try.
