Hello friendly neighbours to the south...

I have a 1974 $1 bill with upside-down serial numbers.

I have a few questions:

1. Is this error rare? Is the bill worth much (it's uncirculated).

2. Which TPG would you recommend getting it graded at. If I got it graded at a Canadian TPG, would this detract from the resale value?

Thanks!

You have a Type 1 inverted overprint error. Dr. Bart's US Paper Money Error book lists this at $500 for a choice uncirculated piece. The book also gives a rarity scale from R1 to R9. Inverted overprints fall in R5.

As for TPG grading services, I'd go with either PCGS or PMG. I prefer PMG over PCGS though, but both companies are equally good.

Neat! PMG seems to be the market standard when trading paper currency.

Newbie on notes ... I have very little knowledge so accept the following as a question rather that definitive information ...

The note appears to be series 1974 ... and I thought that all notes of that era with serial numbers beginning with '99' were BEP produced uncut sheets.

If correct ... did this well marginalized note come from such an uncut sheet? And does that mean it's brethren were also inverted overprint errors?

http://www.uspapermoney.info/serials/f1974_s.html states

Quote:
When printing of this series began, serial numbers in each block ran all the way up to 99999999, but the maximum was later reduced to 99840000

Someone can correct me if I'm mistaken but uncut sheets with the high serial numbers weren't offered for sale until the Series of 1981.

Correct. In 1974, the maximum serial was 99840000, so this was from normal production.

I forgot to

you to CCF.

I love errors (both USA & Global) and have to keep reminding myself that my divorce 5 years ago erased my life savings so I could keep the house...

There was a time I could drop 25K in cash on Coins, those days are long gone, but I have one heck of a error collection...
