I went through some of the large cents I bought when I first got interested in them several months ago, and culled 3 out of 5 of them. They're on ebay now.

I kept 2. The first one I ever got, which was $1.50, and has the date rubbed off - no idea what date it is, and this 1853. For some reason, to me, this one has a sort of in-hand eye appeal. What do you say? Cleaned? Retoned?

I do keep this one separate though, so that it doesn't harm the others.

I agree with Ed. I don't really see any red flags. I see an honest VF-20 with some micro porosity. Has it been cleaned and retoned? Yes, they've all been cleaned and retoned. Just because it's dark doesn't mean anything. After 25 years of collecting large cents I've seen just about every color, surface, and type of damage that can happen to a 170 year old piece of copper. Yeah this coin is not the nice chocolate brown that copper collectors like to see but don't discount the poor girl, she's been around the block a few times. No need to keep it separate either.

Well, I'm always worried that she'll bite one of the others or something, but yeah I like two tone thing she has going on...
