I finally got around to taking photos, and adding this one to my PCGS showcase set... http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/sho...aspx?sc=1855It was a head scratcher to figure out. After testing it with the XRF and digging through mint files, I finally figured out that this 1-cent was struck on a Portuguese 2 1/2 escudos Cu-Ni planchet. The Royal Canadian Mint did not strike coins for Portugal, but they did manufacture Type II planchets and shipped them to Portugal. Somehow, a planchet escaped... Great work Roger! I'm just wondering...What hoops did you have to jump through to get PCGS to certify the coin as stated? Did you have to send them documented proof of your research? Please share the process as I dont imagine it was a simple one.

OK SPPwhat is the legality of it? since it was actually "never" legally struck? How can it be an error if it was done purposely? How can that planchet get into a coin striking mechanism and be stuck on both sides if it was not supposed to be there? is it a "legitimate" fake?

I have a better question... Are you a legitimate Troll?

SPP- I noticed a 1980 MS64 brown cent struck on a Cu-Ni planchet, 2.0 grams, country unknown in your registry set, very nice by the way. Do you think it could be a Costa Rica 1979-10 centimos, copper/nickel, 2gr. , 18mm..?

I don't think so pennyman007, I compared that coin to a Costa Rica 10-centimos and the colour and compositions were not right... that coin in the showcase set is about 85% Cu and 15% Ni, which gives it that golden colour... it remains a mystery...

@ 47p7, seeing as it somehow slipped into the cent presses it would be considered a legit error by the mint, on the other hand if it could be definitively proven it was done on purpose by a mint employee then the person who did it could get in trouble and I believe if I'mcorrect that the mint would have an excuse to confiscate the coin. @ pawnS I see that 47p7 used the word "fake", he could have used that word by accident or because he didn't fully understand either way what you said, that no nice . and spp, simply amazing coin...

No problem 47p7, were an educational forum and not a criticism site. Spp, do you have any theories or ideas as to how this spectacular piece was created? Do you believe it was produced purposely and smuggled out? Or perhaps the planchet was lost and returned to the wrong bin where it was struck and shipped out in a bag? Edited to change price to piece, auto correct used to be my friend but now he changes words just for the heck of it
