Bought this coin in 2007-8 for .25 at a flea market. Funny story about it too.. Back in 07-08 or so, around that time, I brought it to school with me. It got stolen out of my desk at school, and I never found it. It was within the last couple weeks of school and stuff, and I had given up hopes on finding it. Kept checking in with the office and seeing if it turned up, but it never did. The next school year, I was at the same school. I had a girl come up to me within the first couple months of school (I still know her to this day) and she said she found (this) coin by her desk on the floor. She handed me the coin, and because she knew somehow I liked coins, she thought it was mine. Ever since then, I've had the hunch she stole it and felt bad and gave it back. Never quite understood that.

Anyways, nevertheless, I've had it on my nightstand in one area for quite some time. Haven't touched it really since. Never got any ID on it, so any help would be awesome.

For starters , it brings me great honor to welcome you to CCF and to the Ancients threads.

It looks like Emperor Trajan (98-117 CE) . I would say a Copper As but could you please post the weight and diameter .

Maybe the girl likes you and wanted to find a way to talk to you.

Can't really add much to what 'Augustus_Maximus' said, but perhaps under different light some of the legend might become legible and the reverse identifiable.

I can not comment on the coin but what Medieval said may have some truth in it, as I have known a couple of girls in my life who have done a similar thing.

Since the portrait expert have various opinions, the only resolution will be if one can read (part of) the obverse legend.

If I were you, I would deliberately damage it.
I would get it engraved.
Simple decisions can change the direction of one's life.
You never know, it may well end up being by far the most valuable coin in your collection!

That's a nice story, with that along I would hold onto this coin if only as a lucky piece. Based on the condition it's difficult to say who it is. It is from Roman times though. My guess would be Elagabalus.
