A couple new additions to my Roman Britain set. The Commodus was misattributed, but I think I have it correct now.

Commodus: AR Denarius. M COMM ANT AVG P BRIT FEL. RIC107Ac

Carausius: AE Antoninianus, RIC143

Constantine II: AE Follis,

Very nice coins, especially the Carausius - not easy to get him in such good a condition.

oh cool, all nice.

I don't have a carausis coin, that's very neat.

..and I don't have a commodus either.

shame on me for that one.

A nice little set. I'mguessing (by its lack of mention), that you are unaware of the additional significance of the Carausius? You'll note that RIC 143 lists the inscription PAX AVGGG and not PAX AVG. You can tell this is PAX AVGGG as the break visible is PAX A-[VGGG] istead of the usual PA-X AVG. Carausius issued these to try and get some legitimacy - the emperors in Rome were clearly close to retaking the island, so Carausius started issuing coins depicting them and with AVGGG legends (the 3 Gs being the 3 emperors - him and the two in Rome). This happened right at the end of his reign and so you can often tell just from the design of the bust.

Ben, thanks for the additional info on the Carausius. Fascinating tie in to the history surrounding the coin.

very nice Carausius , difficult to find in this quality .Carausius was the only Roman emperor of 'Belgian' origin , being a menber of the tribe of the Menapii , who were living at the present Belgian coast .
